The Charred Cube series explore a repetitive grid arrangement based on the number 5. The number five is a prime number and is the only prime number that is the sum of two consecutive prime numbers, 2 and 3. The cubes are also reminiscent of those ancient city walls with built-in steps. The technique to make the artworks uses a traditional gilder’s method of applying clay bole over the top of layers of gesso to achieve a surface suitable for gilding. This gives the pieces a soft worked appearance and further references some early building techniques such as adobe.
